JIMMY CARTER: $167K, GEORGIA

After living in an extravagant White House mansion during his presidential term from 1977 to 1981, Jimmy Carter is now spending his time in a simple home in Plains, Georgia. The house he chooses to live with his wife of 75 years, Rosalynn Carter, is the same place that he built himself in 1961. It looks like Carter planned to retire here all along.

The two-bedroom property just cost the former President $167,000, which is a lot cheaper than the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside his house. At least, he wouldn’t have any problems paying a high mortgage for this. He can live a serene life as he spends the weekend with his neighbors, enjoying eating on paper plates and drinking bargain-brand wine— a modest life indeed. The couple also makes their own yogurt. Despite being frugal and modest, this may be the lifestyle that Carter has been craving for a long time, given how hectic and fast-paced his presidential run was.
